About Tobaccoville

Tobaccoville is a village in Forsyth and Stokes counties with 2,209 residents in the 2020 census. A Tobaccoville post office opened in 1879, but the village was not incorporated until 1991, in part to avoid annexation by neighboring King. It remains largely rural, with farmhouses, mid-century homes and newer houses on large lots, and plenty of barns, shops and outbuildings.

Well and septic plumbing

Many Tobaccoville properties use private wells and septic systems rather than municipal water and sewer. That shapes common problems:

  • Pressure that rises and falls, or a pump that clicks on and off constantly, usually means a waterlogged pressure tank, a failing pressure switch or a leak somewhere in the system.
  • Sputtering faucets can mean air in the lines from a failing well component or low water level.
  • Stains and odors: orange or brown staining suggests iron, blue-green staining suggests acidic water attacking copper, and a rotten-egg smell suggests hydrogen sulfide, sometimes made worse by a water heater's anode rod. A water test guides treatment.
  • Slow drains throughout the house often point to the septic tank or drain field rather than the pipes. Know when the tank was last pumped.

Other common calls

Frozen lines

Rural homes with open crawlspace vents, pipes to detached garages and yard hydrants are exposed in arctic cold snaps. Insulation, heat cable on the worst runs and draining unused lines before winter prevent most damage. See frozen pipes.

Water heaters on well water

Well water can carry sediment and minerals that shorten water heater life. Flushing the tank once a year and checking the anode rod help. A sulfur smell only from the hot water side is a classic anode-rod issue. See water heaters.

Older farmhouse plumbing

Farmhouses updated in stages may have galvanized, copper and plastic lines together, with drains added over the decades. See repiping.

Outbuildings

Barns, shops and livestock waterers need lines buried below the frost line or protected, and yard hydrants that drain when shut off.

Tobaccoville plumbing FAQs

Why does my well pump turn on and off so often?

Short cycling usually means a waterlogged pressure tank, a failing pressure switch or a leak. It wears out the pump, so it is worth fixing quickly.

Why does only my hot water smell like rotten eggs?

On well water, bacteria can react with a water heater's magnesium anode rod to make hydrogen sulfide. A different anode type often solves it.

When was Tobaccoville incorporated?

In 1991, although its post office dates to 1879.
