About Lewisville
Lewisville is a town in western Forsyth County with 13,388 residents in the 2020 census, up from 12,639 in 2010. It grew from a rural crossroads into a suburb of Winston-Salem, but it has kept a more spread-out, wooded feel than neighboring Clemmons. You will find 1970s and 1980s ranches and two-stories on large lots, newer subdivisions, and older farmhouses that predate the town's 1991 incorporation by decades.
Water, sewer, wells and septic
Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities provides water and sewer in much of Lewisville (Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities), but sewer service does not reach every street, and many properties, especially larger lots and older homes, use septic systems. Some homes also have private wells. That matters for plumbing:
- On septic, a backup may be the tank or drain field rather than the pipe. If several fixtures back up at once, it is worth knowing when the tank was last pumped.
- On a well, low pressure can be the pressure tank, pressure switch or pump rather than the house plumbing, and water quality can differ from city water.
The plumbing problems we hear about in Lewisville
Roots on wooded lots
Lewisville's tree cover is a big part of its appeal, and roots from those trees find their way into older sewer laterals and septic lines. Repeat main-line clogs call for a camera inspection.
Polybutylene and early CPVC
Homes from the 1980s and early 1990s may have polybutylene or early CPVC supply lines, both of which become more failure-prone with age. See repiping.
Long runs and crawlspaces
Spread-out ranch homes on crawlspaces can have long supply runs near foundation vents that freeze in hard cold snaps. Insulation and closing vents before arctic air arrives help. See frozen pipes.
Water heaters in garages and crawlspaces
Some older homes have water heaters tucked in crawlspaces or unconditioned garages, which makes leaks easy to miss and freeze protection more important. Replacement is a good time to consider moving the heater somewhere more accessible or adding a pan and drain.
Outbuildings and barns
Detached garages, shops and barns with water lines need freeze protection and their own shut-offs. Yard hydrants should drain properly when shut off.

Lewisville plumbing FAQs
Is all of Lewisville on city sewer?
No. Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities serves much of the town, but many properties, especially larger lots and older homes, use septic systems.
Why is my water pressure low on a well?
Common causes include a failing pressure tank, a pressure switch set too low, a worn well pump or a clogged sediment filter, rather than the house piping itself.
Should I move a water heater out of my crawlspace?
It can make leaks easier to spot and maintenance easier. At minimum, a crawlspace heater should have a drain pan, freeze protection and easy access to its shut-off.
How do I keep a barn or shop water line from freezing?
Insulate exposed lines, use heat cable where needed, install a separate shut-off, and drain the line before hard freezes if the building is unheated.
