About Bethania

Bethania was established by Moravian settlers in 1759, making it the oldest municipality in Forsyth County. It celebrated its 250th anniversary in 2009 and was most recently incorporated in 1995, when its original nineteenth-century town charter was reactivated. The 2020 census counted 341 residents. The historic village center keeps its Moravian layout, with homes along Main Street and long lots stretching behind them, surrounded by farmland and newer houses.

Plumbing in very old houses

Homes in Bethania's historic core were built long before indoor plumbing, so every bathroom and kitchen in them was added later, often in stages and often in spaces never meant to hold pipes. That brings particular challenges:

  • Pipes in unusual places: supply and drain lines run through added closets, under porches, along exterior walls and through stone or brick foundations.
  • Freeze exposure: lines in old crawlspaces, additions and porches are vulnerable in hard cold snaps. See frozen pipes.
  • Mixed materials: galvanized, copper, CPVC and PEX can all appear in one house.
  • Respect for the structure: routing new pipe without cutting historic framing, floors or walls takes planning. Ask how a plumber will run lines before work starts.

Wells, septic and city service

Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities serves parts of the Bethania area (Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities), but many properties in and around town use private wells, septic systems or both. On septic, backups and slow drains may involve the tank or field. On a well, pressure problems often trace to the pressure tank or switch, and water chemistry can differ sharply from the very soft city supply. A water test is worth doing if you see staining, odors or repeated pinhole leaks.

Common calls around Bethania

  • Water heaters in old houses tucked into tight closets or crawlspaces, where replacement means planning the route out.
  • Slow drains and backups on aging laterals or septic lines under old trees.
  • Low pressure from galvanized pipe or well equipment.
  • Frozen lines in additions, porches and crawlspaces.
  • Outdoor hydrants and garden lines on long lots that need to drain properly in winter.

Historic district considerations

Bethania's village center is a nationally recognized historic district. Interior plumbing work generally does not change a home's historic character, but exterior changes, such as new roof vents on a front slope or visible pipes on a facade, may be subject to local review. Check with the town before changing exterior features.
