About Mocksville
Mocksville is a town of 5,927 residents (2020 census) and the county seat of Davie County. It sits where I-40 and US 64 and US 601 meet, about 25 miles west of Winston-Salem. Homes near the historic downtown date back to the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, surrounded by mid-century neighborhoods and newer subdivisions.
A new water source in 2026
On August 27, 2026, the Town of Mocksville stopped operating its Hugh A. Lagle Water Treatment Plant, which had treated water from Hunting Creek for more than 50 years. The town now buys water treated at Davie County's new Cooleemee water treatment plant, which draws from the Yadkin River, while the town continues to own and operate its distribution system and serve its customers (Davie County Enterprise Record, Sept. 3, 2026).
A change in source water can sometimes bring temporary changes in taste, or loosen sediment in old pipes and water heaters. If you notice discolored water, run the cold tap for a few minutes; if it persists or affects only hot water, the water heater or the home's own piping may need attention. Report ongoing water quality concerns to the town.
The plumbing problems we hear about in Mocksville
Historic in-town homes
Older houses near the square often have galvanized supply lines (low pressure, rusty water), cast-iron drains and clay sewer laterals under mature trees. See repiping and sewer line repair.
Mid-century homes
Ranches from the 1950s through the 1970s typically have copper supply lines that can develop pinhole leaks, and cast-iron drains that crack under the house. See leak repair.
Water heaters
Sediment buildup and aging tanks are common reasons for rumbling, rusty hot water or leaks. North Carolina generally requires a permit and inspection for water heater replacement. See water heaters.
Drains and laterals
Grease, wipes and roots cause most main-line clogs. Repeat clogs call for a camera inspection. See drain cleaning.
Outside town limits
Homes outside town service may be on Davie County water, a private well, or septic, which changes how pressure and drain problems are diagnosed.
