About Advance
Advance is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in northern Davie County, with 1,499 residents in the 2020 census counted within the CDP itself, though the Advance mailing area covers a much wider stretch of the county. It lies along NC 801 south of Bermuda Run, and its northern edge is close to Winston-Salem. The area mixes farmland and older country homes with newer subdivisions built for commuters to Winston-Salem.
Wells, septic and county water
Davie County provides public water along many roads in the Advance area, but sewer service is more limited, so many homes use septic systems, and some rural properties still rely on private wells. That changes how common problems are handled:
- On a well, fluctuating or low pressure usually starts with the pressure tank, switch or pump, and water chemistry varies from well to well.
- On septic, slow drains and gurgling throughout the house may mean the tank needs pumping or the drain field is struggling.
- On county water, the private service line from the meter to the house is the owner's responsibility.
The plumbing problems we hear about in Advance
Well water and water heaters
Sediment and minerals in some well water shorten water heater life and clog aerators and fixture cartridges. Annual tank flushing and a sediment filter at the pressure tank help. A water test shows whether treatment such as a softener or iron filter makes sense. See water heaters.
Frozen pipes
Rural homes with crawlspaces, detached garages, barns and yard hydrants have plenty of freeze points when arctic air reaches the Piedmont. See frozen pipes.
Newer subdivisions
Homes from the 2000s onward mostly see fixture wear, water heater replacements, supply-line failures and irrigation backflow issues.
Older country homes
Farmhouses updated over the decades may mix galvanized, copper and plastic pipe, and drains added in stages. See repiping.
Septic-friendly habits
Keep wipes, grease and excess food waste out of drains, spread out laundry loads, and fix running toilets quickly; a running toilet can send hundreds of gallons a day into a septic system.
Tell us whether you are on a well or county water, septic or sewer, and what is going on, and we'll call you back.

Advance plumbing FAQs
Is Advance on public water?
Davie County provides public water along many roads in the Advance area, but many homes use septic systems and some rural properties rely on private wells.
Why does a running toilet matter so much on septic?
A constantly running toilet can send hundreds of gallons of extra water into the tank each day, which can overload the drain field.
Do I need a water softener on well water in Advance?
It depends on the well. A water test shows hardness, iron and acidity, which decide whether a softener, iron filter or neutralizer is useful.
