About Rural Hall
Rural Hall is a town in northern Forsyth County with 3,360 residents in the 2020 census. It grew up around the railroad north of Winston-Salem and sits along the US 52 corridor toward King and Mount Airy. Covington Memorial Park is the town's public park. The housing ranges from early-twentieth-century homes near the old town center to post-war ranches and newer subdivisions, with rural properties around the edges.
Water and sewer in Rural Hall
Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities serves Rural Hall's water and sewer system (Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities), so in-town homes get the same very soft water as Winston-Salem. Properties outside the service lines rely on wells and septic systems. If you are not sure which you have, a water and sewer bill from the utility is the giveaway.
The plumbing problems we hear about in Rural Hall
Older homes near the center
Houses from the first half of the twentieth century may still have galvanized supply lines that cause low pressure and rusty water, plus cast-iron drains and clay laterals that crack and let roots in. See repiping and sewer line repair.
Mid-century ranches
Brick ranches from the 1950s through the 1970s usually have copper supply lines, which last a long time but can develop pinhole leaks with age, and cast-iron drains under the house that eventually crack. Leaks in crawlspaces can go unnoticed for months. See leak repair.
Frozen pipes
Northern Forsyth County can run a few degrees colder than downtown Winston-Salem on clear winter nights. Crawlspace pipes near vents and hose bibs left connected are the usual freeze victims. See frozen pipes.
Wells and septic outside town
On rural properties, low pressure is often the well's pressure tank or switch, and slow drains throughout the house may be the septic tank or drain field. Keeping wipes and grease out of septic systems avoids many backups.
Water heaters
Older homes sometimes have water heaters in tight closets or crawlspaces. Replacement is a chance to add a drain pan, a proper relief-valve discharge line and better access. In North Carolina, water heater replacement generally requires a permit and inspection.
