About Kernersville
Kernersville is the largest suburb of Winston-Salem, with 26,481 residents in the 2020 census, up from 23,123 in 2010. Most of the town is in eastern Forsyth County, and a small part extends into Guilford County. Its historic downtown, home to the eccentric Körner's Folly house, is surrounded by mid-century neighborhoods and a wide ring of subdivisions built from the 1980s onward, with commercial growth along I-40 and Business 40.
Water and sewer
Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities serves Kernersville's water and sewer (Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities), so most homes get the same very soft water as the city. A few properties on the edges use wells and septic. Soft water means little scale, so pipe age and material, not mineral buildup, drive most supply-line problems.
The plumbing problems we hear about in Kernersville
Polybutylene in 1980s and early-1990s subdivisions
Kernersville grew fast during the years polybutylene supply pipe was popular. Flexible gray pipe stamped "PB" is a known failure risk, especially at fittings. Replacing it proactively avoids a burst at the worst time. See repiping.
Water heaters reaching end of life
Many homes in 1990s and 2000s subdivisions are on their second or third water heater, and neighborhoods built at the same time tend to see heaters fail in waves. See water heaters.
Older downtown homes
Homes near downtown from the early twentieth century may have galvanized supply lines, cast-iron drains and clay laterals with roots, the same issues seen in Winston-Salem's historic neighborhoods. See sewer line repair.
Slab and basement homes
Kernersville has more slab-on-grade homes than older parts of the county, and leaks under a slab show up as warm spots on the floor, a constantly running meter or unexplained dampness. Rerouting lines overhead is often simpler than breaking the slab. See leak repair.
Sewer backups
On utility sewer, call City Link at 311 or 336-727-8000 first when sewage backs up, so the utility can check the portion of the line in the public right-of-way.
Tell us your neighborhood, roughly when the house was built and what you are seeing, and we'll call you back.
