About King

King is a city in Stokes and Forsyth counties with 7,096 residents in the 2020 census, about 15 miles northwest of Winston-Salem along US 52. It grew from a railroad stop into a bedroom community for Winston-Salem, with subdivisions from the 1970s onward around an older town center, and rural land rising toward Pilot Mountain and the Sauratown range.

King's water and sewer

The City of King operates its own water distribution system, and its water source is the Yadkin River. Sewage collected by the city is treated at Winston-Salem's Lower Muddy Creek facility (City of King, Water). Outside city service, many homes use private wells and septic systems. When something goes wrong, the first question is which of those you have:

  • On city water and sewer, the private service line and building drain are the owner's; the city handles its mains.
  • On a well, pressure problems often trace to the pressure tank, switch or pump.
  • On septic, slow drains throughout the house may mean the tank or drain field.

The plumbing problems we hear about in King

1970s-1990s subdivisions

Much of King's housing dates from the 1970s through the 1990s, the era of copper, early CPVC and polybutylene supply lines. Polybutylene in particular is worth replacing before it fails. See repiping.

Colder winters

King sits higher and farther north than Winston-Salem and can be noticeably colder on winter nights. Crawlspace and exterior-wall pipes freeze more often here. See frozen pipes.

Hillside lots and sloped drains

Rolling terrain means walk-out basements, long sewer laterals and some homes below street level. Basement bathrooms may need ejector pumps, and lines that run downhill under trees invite root intrusion.

Water heaters

Whether the water is from the city or a well affects how fast sediment builds up. Annual flushing helps either way. In North Carolina, replacing a water heater generally requires a permit and inspection. See water heaters.

Drain clogs

Kitchen grease, wipes and roots cause most main-line clogs. Repeat clogs are worth a camera inspection. See drain cleaning.

Tell us whether you are on city water or a well and what is going on, and we'll call you back.
